Spleen removal indic: The most common reason for splenectomy is trauma. Non-emergent indications are generally for blood related disorders causing sequestration of cells within the spleen causing alterations in blood counts such as anemia and low platelet counts. Itp and hereditary spherocystosis are among the more common indications. Occasionally tumors and cysts may arise in the spleen that should be removed.
