Outpatient procedure: Hammertoe repair is usually done as an outpatient in an ambulatory surgery center or hospital setting (go home the same day). It usually involves an incision on the top of the toe and removal of a portion of bone from the joint. A k-wire also called a pin is often used to maintain alignment for a few weeks while it heals. You can walk on it after surgery but should avoid strenuous activity.

Yes: There are a variety of surgical options available. The procedure will depend on individual clinical factors, surgeon preference and the patient’s general health. Discuss your options with your surgeon.
