Very complicated: The limbic system includes multiple structures in your brain which work together to receive, relay, and sort stimuli into dangerous and not dangerous -- and send forth responses through neurological, hormonal, and biochemical means. Emotions follow suit, with the amygdala firing with anger and fear and the hippocampus learning and storing new information. Good video: http://tinyurl.Com/n9xfxtg.
