What is reason for putting rubber bands around hemorrhoids?

Cut Off Blood Supply: Internal hemorrhoids are covered by intestinal lining rather than skin; therefore, they do not have pain fibers. Accordingly, we can put a rubber band around the base of these without anesthesia, after which the hemorrhoid tissue will "shrivel up and die". The hemorrhoid will then fall off a few days later. Since external hemorrhoids are covered by skin, we cannot do this due to pain issues.

Treatment: Rubber banding ligation is for internal hemorrhoids only, not anything external. It is an office procedure that when done properly and for the correct diagnosis can cut off the blood suppley to a hemorrhoid allowing it to slough in 10-14 days, providing several years of hemorrhoid relief. It is not permanent, but is an alternative to formal surgery.
