A member asked:

If guaiac is negative can you still have bleeding in gi tract? thank you.

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Yes: If it is an upper GI bleed and you take guaiac of stool, it will take time before the blood gets there, so the initial guaiac could be negative. If the bleeding is intermittent and it stops for several days before rebleeding, the blood can be cleared and guaiac turn negative (although that takes days) then positive later.
