X-rays needed: Clearly, if the toe is still swollen bruised, painful and most importantly, not in proper alignment, x-rays are needed. Buddy splinting is effective if the toe is in proper alignment and the fracture (if present) is non-displaced.

Displaced fracture: If eccymosis (black and blue) swelling and pain is still present after 5 weeks, you must have a displaced fracture of the toe. You should see your local podiatrist for the proper treatment.
