My friend got hit above the eye by a baseball while throwing. he has a swollen lump hanging over his eye. could it possibly be a blown blood vessel?

See details: It is a soft tissue contusion. Blood vessel damage is often a component of a contusion but is not the primary issue. If it persists, he should consider x rays to rule out fracture.
