Variable: Occasional primary peritonitis and adhesions. Most are following inflammation, trauma, surgery and are filmy to thick bands of fibrous tissue sticking intestine to itself or to abdominal structures. Most are without consequences, but some may obstruct the bowel and cause mischief.

Adhesions are scars: that form after infection or inflammation, and commonly after abdominal surgery. It does not cause problems, unless intestines or other viscera become tangled around them or within them.
