Defective adhesion: This occurs, usually after a corneal abrasion, when the new skin (epithelium) covers the cornea but has defective adhesion to the underlying basement membrane. This leads to partial elevation of the epithelium and sometimes reproduction of the initial abrasion. It can last several years and is painful. A corneal specialist can recommended ways to lessen the pain and time.
