Sciatica: The sciatic nerve emerges from the lower spinal cord, and divides into the peroneal and posterior tibial nerves. Sciatica is the term to describe nerve compression affecting the nerve roots of the sciatic nerve, such as L-5 or S-1, and pain radiates down the buttock into the leg.
