METATARSALGIA: Pain in the balls of the feet is common (it's called metatarsalgia). You best bet is to get a pair of good orthotics to put in your shoes. Orthotics can be custom made or can be found over-the-counter. Remember: buy them in pairs. You have to treat both feet.

Painful feet: Ball of foot pain indicates lack of support in your arch from your shoes and sandals. As a result there is more pressure on the ball of your feet. You need good, stable, supportive shoes and sandals and may benefit from arch supports. The firmer the insert the better. Custom inserts or orthotics may be necessary.

Pain caused by: When you have pain at the ball of your feet, it could be from several causes. If you've been active, you could be causing "capsulitis" or inflammation of the joints at the ball of your feet. Also, there could be a stress fracture, but diagnostic tests are needed to rule that out. Lastly, you could also have an aggravated nerve called a "neuroma" or (historically) "morton's neuroma".
