Trigger asthma: Smoking can have many short and long term adverse including worsening asthma. The children of mothers who smoke increase the risk of their children having asthma. Children exposed to second hand smoke have an increased risk of asthma. Adult who smoke have an increased risk of copd, lung cancer and other problems.

Yes!: Yes. smoking damages your lungs and makes them more likely to be " reactive" which is a component of asthma. You are more likely to have chronic cough, shortness of breath, exercise intolerance and overall trouble breathing!

Define "pick up": You do not "pick up"asthma like you would a strep throat after exposure to an infected person. However, anyone with the predisposition (genetics) or lung sensitivity (acquired) can allow it to emerge & become symptomatic if they smoke. Other issues like the lung disease alpha-1-antitrypsin deficiency or sarcoid can predispose a smoker to have more dramatic lung disease.
