Acute and chronic: generally trauma to an extremity with rapid significant swelling can cause in upper or lower extremities. extremely painful. hurts to lift ankle in the calf area is the usual finding. the compartments are muscles that travel in fascial compartments that get to tight from swelling and there is no yield or give of these compartments. can be critical to get compartments open quickly
