Same as exertional: Chronic compartment syndrome is the same as exertional compartment syndrome. It is when the pressure from the muscle compartment in the shin is high. It causes pain in the front of the shin after activity or exercise and it typically is relieved after rest. Some patients report numbness and tingling to the front of the foot as well. It can be experienced in any kind of sport that involves running.

Elevated pressure: In the body, muscles are separated into different compartments and covered with fascia. If there is trauma to the compartment, the swelling and pressure in the compartment becomes elevated. The increased pressure impedes blood flow out and into the compartment. If the injury is acute, emergency surgical release of the compartment may be required or the muscle may die.
