Absolutely: Although some insurance plans insist that you start with a referral from your primary care doctor before seeking help with a psychologist or psychiatrist, most mental health professionals will accept self-referrals. The american psychological association has an excellent referral system on its website. Good luck.

Yes you can: Refer yourself to a psychologist. You may want to check with your health insurance provider if you want to use insurance since they may want your physician to make a referral, but if you plan on paying out of pocket, you can call whomever you like.

Legally protected : The word psychologist is a legally protected title. In order to claim that title, you have to have a doctorate in either clinical or counseling psychology, and be licensed to practice in your state. That is the point at which you can call yourself a psychologist, when you know you've passed the licensing exam.

Depends: If you have insurance you may need a referral from your primary care physician, especially if you have an HMO. If you are private pay, then no you don't need a referral.
