A member asked:

Is there any permanent treatment for rheumatic heart disease and to completely eliminate a steprocoocus bacteria?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Some what: Depending on the severity, rhd can be controlled with medications. Penicillin keeps the strep in check to prevent recurrences. As you get older, (>40), if you're not around children, pcn prophylaxis can be stopped. The ultimate treatment for rhd is commissurotomy or valve replacement but only in severe, symptomatic mitral stenosis. You can lead a normal life with treatment!
