Many causes: People can get knee pain whether they exercise regularly or not. Inflammation can set in with or without regular exercise. Cartilage can wear out from years of just normal walking. Many athletes who exercise all the time develop severe knee wear and tear, but exercise does keep the surrounding muscles strong which is a good thing.
