Personal balance: Pro-biotics are different for everyone due to the complexity of the gut micro-flora system. Dosing is just as complicated. The general consensus is to use them if they give you a sense of relief from gastrointestinal disturbances. A variety of products are available such as yogurt, kefir or capsule supplements.

Balance: $$$ and benefit. Yoghurt tastes good and why not eat it once daily as long as you like it - no major side effects (such as calories). Waste money on supplements? Nothing proven besides that the producer will get rich. Taking an antimicrobial? Then i will recommend joghurt or s. Boulardii to avoid c. Difficile.

Yes they are: 20 billion or more is good usually. Look for probiotics at the health food store and not the grocery store. Pb8 is a good brand as is culturelle. 70% of our immune system is in the gut. Balanced bacteria in the gut do help boost the immune system. Occasionally someone may notice constipation or diarrhea on probiotics-...Stop them if that happens.

Different strains: So typically there are lots of different 'good organisms' (aka probiotics). Since they are formulated differently, you would want to go based on the formulated directions. The range is too wide to give you an actual number but it can be 100s of billions of organisms or 10s of colonys. Generally they can be helpful for digestive issues.

Depends on strain ;:: There are many strains of probiotics. Many are killed by stomach acid so the # to take depends on how well they survive (which varies). Enteric-coated forms survive better so 1 billion of those may equal 20 billion of another type. Research suggests many benefits.I advise at least 20 billion of a type with multiple proven strains.See https://4d.Primarycarenet.Org/pi161/pi161_probiotics_article.Pdf.
