Many things: True intestinal obstruction has many possible causes, depending on the individual. Hernia, scar tissue (adhesions) from previous surgery, tumors, and intussusception are among these. Most obstructions are partial, as when they are complete, it becomes a surgical emergency to prevent perforation and peritonitis.
