Anesthetic?: Many dentists will use a numbing gel first on a qtip in the injection site to sort of pre-numb the injection site then depending on what tooth it is needing to be numb a local anesthetic will be administered in the area of where the nerve enters the tooth, the anesthetic then blocks the ability of the nerve to feel pain which causes the numbing feeling and can last anywhere from 1/2hr on up to 4-5.
