Many causes of stone: Gallstones form when there is an imbalance in the components that make the bile. As an example cholesterol stones may form as a result of too much cholesterol in the bile. Another cause may be the inability of the gallbladder to empty properly, i.E billiary dyskinesia pigment stones are more common in people with certain medical conditions like cirrhosis or sickle cell or other genetic predispos.

Chemical imbalance: Gallstones are made of cholesterol, bile acids and bilirubin. If there is an imbalance in these, it can predispose to certain types of gallstones. Obesity can be linked to elevated cholesterol and predispose to cholesterol stones, which make up about 80% of gallstones in the us. Red cell breakdown, from anemias can predispose to pigmented gallstones.
