Depends: There are different organisms that are more associated with bacterial meningitis. The two common in your age range are the pneumococcus and the meningococcus. Meningococcus causes so-called infectious meningitis. The risk of transmission is low except for close household contacts and those exposed to oral secretions. Prophylactic antimicrobials can do used for appropriate contacts.
