Superficial: If the blood is bright red and is on top of the stool it may be from external hemorrhoids or an anal fissure. Have a rectal exam if the bleeding persists.

Hemorrhoids: Most likely hemorrhoids if there is no pain. More serious things like rectal or anal cancer occur more frequently as you get older.
