Floaters: Typically, floaters develop as the vitreous jelly degenerates with age. They consist of connective tissue that moves around in the liquified vitreous. They typically do not get reabsorbed over time, but often patients just ignore them. Sometimes, floaters are caused by bleeding in the vitreous and this can get reabsorbed as time passes. Contact lens use does not cause floaters to develop.

Vitreous gel: Floaters are non dissolved normal gel called the vitreous humor in the back of the eye . They can be associated retinal issues, so you should have a dilated eye exam.

Best evaluated: Floaters are common in more elderly populations but are not often found in your age group. Have you had trauma to your head or eyes or is there a family history of eye problems? It is worth your time to let an ophthalmologist get a look at your eyes to see if there is some underlying problem.
