Variety of things: Follow very strict gastroesophageal reflux disease (gerd) guidelines ( eliminate caffeine- including chocolate, alcohol, peppermint, nicotine), eat small meals, avoid fats, no bending over or strenuous abdominal exercise. No laying down flat, drink frequent sips of water and chew gum. Take Omeprazole once a day. If symptoms do not resolve over next week see your doc.

Lying down: ...Allows the stomach acid to reflux up the esophagus and cause pain, which persists until you get up or take something for it. Liquid antacid better for "putting out the fire, " and h2 blocker (like pepcid) to prevent it (but takes a few days for full effect). Should also follow up with your dr if been going on for a while, to be sure nothing else present.
