Can you tell me more about central lumbar canal stenosis/spinal stenosis?

Degenerative disc : When there is degeneration in the lumbar spine then the ligaments can hypertrophy (enlarge) along with the facet joints and cause narrowing in the spine called stenosis . If it is mainly in the center then it is called central stenosis . Also any significant central disc herniation can also cause central stenosis along with bone spurs.

Common problem: Lumbar spinal stenosis is a common problem especially for those older than 50. It can be managed conservatively in many patients for years. If surgery becomes necessary, it can be planned on an elective basis. Check out spine-health.Com.

Back pain: Spinal stenosis is common at the lumbar 3/4 and 4/5 level. The cause is usually overgrowth of the ligaments and facet joints combined with bulging discs. Pain is worse with standing and better with sitting. Affected people often lean over the carriage for support when walking through stores Physical therapy or chiropractic care may resolve the pain.
