Rare amnio risk: Usually the bleeding is limited thru the compression provided by the surounding placental tissue. This may occur only if the placenta is anterior and the operator must pierce the placenta first, to obtain fluid. The amniocentesis is always done with ultrasound visualization and this situation is very rare. If the mother is rh negative she should receive Rhogam immunization.
