In utero infection.: Listerial infection in pregnant women can lead to fetal death, premature birth, or infected newborns a characteristic severe in utero infection, granulomatosis infantiseptica, may result from transplacental transmission. Infants with this disorder have disseminated abscesses and/or granulomas in multiple internal organs (liver, spleen, lungs, kidneys, brain) and die soon after birth.
