My friends baby died from edwards syndrome. what is that?

Extra chromosome 18: The edward syndrome, named after a researcher who reported the features in 1960, applies to babies born with all or most of an extra 18 chromosome. Half die in the first week & only 5-10% make it past 1 year of age. The extra chromosomal material is in every cell of the body and distorts the formation of major organ systems to the point that longer survival is impossible regardless of treatment.

Extra chromosome 18: Edward’s syndrome is a condition where there is an error when the cells are dividing and there is an extra chromosome 18. The genetic material from the extra chromosome can cause many birth defects and a high mortality rate right after birth. The most common conditions associated with Edward’s syndrome are heart defects, as well as kidney, stomach, and brain complications.

Edwards syndrome: Trisomy 18 - chromosomal condition in 1/5,000 to 6,000 live births due to random events while egg or sperm form. Usually not inherited. 5 to 10% live past 12 months. May have small jaw, mouth & head, low-set ears, short sternum, heart defects, low birth wt, clenched fists, contracted joints, seizures, scoliosis, spina bifida, high BP, cleft palate & lip, hearing loss & mental retardation.
