Years w/o treatment: Post dramatic stress syndrome can last a lifetime if not treated appropriately. A combination of psychotherapy (especially emdr) and medication like zoloft or another ssri plus low-dose (2-5 mg) Abilify (aripiprazole) can often make a big difference and sometimes even provide a cure.

Agree w Dr. Wells: Severe, chronic ptsd may last a lifetime - especially if complex. Ptsd resolves for some. It becomes more hardwired in with time. Thus intervention is imperative to return toward normal function. Cognitive processing therapy (a form of cbt) is the gold standard. Emdr (eyeballs) ; virtual reality exposure therapy can be very helpful. Psychiatric meds are often needed. Take care.
