A retained tampon: Will eventually likely cause the most foul smelling vaginal odor that you can possibly imagine. If you felt all around your vagina and could feel your cervix and around it, then it likely is not there. Of course a doctor looking with a speculum will know for certain.

Tampon: Some tampons can be pushed deeper in the cervix and may stay there until removed. If you're not certain, go to your doc and have him examine you. A retained tampon may cause sepsis and needs to be removed as soon as possible.
