Dry and wet: The macula, central retina develops drusen- debris with age leading to vision loss occuring with retinal degeneration without active blood vessel growth called geographic atrophy or dry age related macular degeneration or "dry amd". The retina appears to slowly wither away, more common. Central macular area degeneration can occur from active blood vessel growing into these areas called "wet amd".

AMD. : As a person ages, the macular tissue may degenerate, or weaken. This is dry amd. If there is significant thinning, then central vision may be affected. If the thinning is severe, then there actually be fluid leakage or hemorrhaging making it wet amd.

Over 50: By definition, age related macular degeneration is diagnosed if the patient is at least age 50 years old, and has typical macular findings. Individuals with a family history of amd are advised to have regular eye exams beginning at age 50 to look for signs, and start vitamin supplementation if appropriate.
