Monitoring System: The lymphatic system absorbs and carries things too big to go into the arteries and veins like bacteria eaten by white cells and digested food. The lymph nodes "taste" the lymph to see if anything bad is there like bacteria, viruses, cancers, etc. When it detects a problem, it alerts the immune system and your body reacts. They enlarge in response to the inflammation they create when they react.

Immune sys highway!: Think of the lymphatic system as a highway for the immune system. Immune cells are transported along lymphatic vessels and stop by lymph nodes, which are meeting points where these immune cells can meet and interact. If an antigen presenting cell encounters a pathogen in the tissues, it will use the lymphatic system to carry a sample to the lymph node and find other cells that recognize it.
