What part of breaking something hurts, the actualy break or the resulting shock afterwards?

Pain is caused by: the break (as in a bone) and the swelling and inflammation caused by bleeding and fluids rushing to try to heal the area. Part of it is a warning to you to take care of yourself after an injury. Part of it is a signal to your body to get to work on self healing. Of course we are not talking about a "broken" heart (or other organ!) Shock in the medical sense (blood loss) is not painful.
