Novacainereplacement: Lidocaine\xylocaine and carbocaine\mepivicaine are probably the two most widely used and popular local anesthetics used by dentists nowadays.

Long out of favor : Dentists stopped using novacaine (procaine) in the 50s/60s because of the high incidence of allergy and development better tolerated anesthetics like lidocaine. More recently, other anesthetics have been developed like prilocaine , bupivucaine, articaine, et al. --which to use is dependent upon the duration of numbness desired.
