It could be a tic: Occasionally children or teenagers will have respiratory symptoms that are due to unconscious, repetitive action of the muscles of respiration. Coughing and throat clearing may result, but will only occur when awake. Especially if your doctor has ruled out other problems and if there are other tics (e.g. Blinking), add or a family history, the diagnosis of respiratory tic should be considered.
