Yes: Iron is safe and effecitve. Take it with food to minimize stomach upset. If you get constipation, take a fiber laxative like metamucil, after discussing it with your doctor. Please follow your doctor's advice.

Yes.: When you are pregnant you need to expand your blood volume, and to make more red cells you need iron. It is absolutely safe, although some people have stomach side effects like constipation or nausea. Slow release versions of iron may be better tolerated in that regard. Iron preparations are available without prescription.
