Migraine: The phenomenon you saw last night was classic for occipital (also called visual) migraine. These are colorful, benign events which cause no long term problems and are not indicative of underlying pathology. The pain you feel is unrelated to the migraine and may reflect sinus disease, or ordinary headache. If this persists you might visit your regular doctor.
