Avoid extremes: At times it is unavoidable, but few things you can do to reduce the risk/chance--always stay well hydrated. Avoid extraneous activities, excessive heat/cold, minimize alcohol use, don't smoke/use drugs, get vaccinated for pneumonia/flu etc...And see your primary doc on a regular basis for check-ups etc...
