Generallly safe: Glucophage(metformin) is commonly prescribed for diabetes and is quite safe as long as you have healthy kidney function. One of its main advantages is that it does not lower the blood sugar too low unlike some other diabetic medications. Monitor your kidney blood tests while on glucophage.

Metformin: The main side effect is diarrhea or other GI intolerance. If you have kidney disease, it can be dangerous. Otherwise it is fairly safe. It is not very good as a weight loss drug.
