A member asked:

My retina specialist did not examine me by scleral depression(lattice).he said there was no need and he would do that if he saw any suspicious spots?

Scleral depression: Is a valued part of the retinal exam. When visual complaints related to retinal disease are elicited, when patients are at risk for vitreoretinal pathology or when suspicion exists on a dilated non-depressed exam, then there is indication for scleral depression. Lattice degeneration in general (there are few exceptions) can be seen without depressed examination during indirect ophthalmoscopy.

Good peripheral view: Retina specialist are trained to examine the entire retina all the way to the most peripheral parts, to search for defects. The view to the far periphery is dependent on factors such as pupil dilation, clarity of media, presence/absence of native lens or lens implant, experience of the retina specialist, etc. If factors are favorable, there may not be a need for scleral depression in some cases.
