A member asked:

Is it possible to have lung volume reduction surgery?

Yes, possibly: Lung volume reduction surgery is used sometimes for patients with severe COPD/emphysema. It removes the most severely damaged parts of the lung, usually the uppermost part (apex). This improves blood flow and oxygen exchange to the part of the lung that has less damage. Patients need careful evaluation to make sure they are good candidates, and take part in lung rehab programs before & after.

Yes: You would need to be evaluated by your pulmonologist then referred to a CT surgeon. If you are a candidate, usually the upper lobes are the ones removed as they typically are the ones most affected.
