Disease vs. symptoms: The disease itself, i.e. Coronary artery disease, is the same in men and women. Risk for men is higher when compared to pre-menopausal women. Other than chest pain, symptoms such as shortness of breath, nausea, jaw or back pain may be the presenting symptoms of CAD or heart attack in women. Some immune-related illnesses such as lupus have been linked to higher risk of CAD in women.
