Cleaning & repair: Some scarring is inevitable, but proper cleaning & repair will prevent unnecessary scarring. The primary causes of bad scarring are infection and improper repair. Your doctor will thoroughly clean the wound and if necessary, give you an antibiotic if there is a significant risk of infection. If sutures are needed, they need to be placed correctly and left in for a sufficient period of time.
