The Ilizarov technique utilizes external fixation with a device that encircles the limb with rings and inserts rods and high tension wires. Ilizarov technique allows for a very rigid fixation that also shares a lot of the load. The benefit is that a surgeon can correct a deformity that involves nonunion or angularity.
