Dr. Pamela Pappas answered

Specializes in Psychiatry

Psychotic: "psychotic" means mentally disturbed or out of contact with reality, which is in contrast with clear, lucid thinking. Both hyper and hypothyroidism can cause disturbances in thinking and expressing one's self. These can be treatable causes of delirium, anxiety, depression, etc. If severe, hallucinations could result. Please do get treatment for your thyroid problem.

Yes: There is an old term called myxedema madness which referred to the combination of edema ( throughout the body particularly noticeable in face and legs ) along with psychotic symptoms all due to hypothyroidism ( low thryoid functioning ) there also can be manic and psychotic symptoms in cases of hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid functioning) . A blood test can usually help make the diagnosis.
