HCTZ (hydrochlorothiazide) facts: Hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) discovered in 1957. Thiazides work by inhibiting reabsorption of sodium in the early part of the kidney’s distal tubules causing increased excretion of it and water. Loop diuretics (such as furosemide) work by inhibiting sodium reabsorption from the loop of henle, a more important sodium reabsorption site. Hctz (hydrochlorothiazide) cannot be used in chronic kidney disease patients. In them loop diuretic are used.
