Very different: Mental illness and mental retardation are two very different things and not neccesarily related. If you have questions about either, you could ask your physician, you could read a good book on the subjects, or you could talk to people who have these conditions. Doctors who treat these conditions are very helpful, and there are many in your area at Illinois Neurologic Institute in Peoria.

Several levels: Broadly, mr is divided into mild, moderate, severe, and profound, contrasting actual function to chronological age. For a 10 yo, mild mr is 5-7 yo; for moderate mr, 3-5 yo; for severe mr, 2-4 yo; and for profound mr, 1-2 yo. This is not always precise--some may be stronger is some areas an weaker in others. Also, the more severe the mr, the quicker the child reaches maximum performance levels.

Observation: Testing for mr is a matter of formal or informal observation of how a child is functioning compared to other children the same age. Approaches vary by age and circumstance. For young children, doctors may ask a series of questions about milestones that the child should be making at each check-up. There also are highly standardized formal tests that look at the child's ability directly.

Where is the line: Mental retardation has two primary criteria. An IQ score that is 2 standard deviations below the mean and difficulty with adaptive functioning. On the weschler intelligence scales, that means an IQ score below 70 (with a mean of 100 and a standard deviation of 15), and a documented difficulty with functioning in daily life activities. The vineland scale of adapative functioning is a test used.
A 43-year-old member asked:

Is there a way to check mental retardation symptoms?

Yes: If you are worried about a child who is not making progress in school, a psychologist should then test your child's iq, memory, handwriting, and achievement scores. A physician can then assess for a cause, if present.
