What are the causes of damage to the ulnar nerve from surgery?

Often compression: During surgery, the arms and legs must be arranged in a fashion to prevent compression of the nerves. Since anesthetics are used during surgery, the arms and the legs can compress themselves if the surgery is a decent length. When nerves are compressed, numbness and weakness may follow. Stretching also may occur during surgery, this may also result in mild damage.
