Post Op Pain: First, as you will learn, it is not your job to take over the responsibility of the surgeon when it comes to post operative care. Your friend was sent home with specific instructions on what to do in the immediate post op time and what the plan is for pain control. Surgeons use pain as a guide to post op complications. If the pain is unexpected or severe please have your friend contact surgeon.

Postsurgical pain: Those peripherally involved, including the brightest med students, should let the surgeon care for his patient and "stay out of it". Recommending any medication, including nsaids, when unaware of the extent of the actual surgical procedure(s) or other major considerations in such spine surgery can be quite dangerous.
